Oil Transportation Planning Guide

Crude oil and condensate are regulated petroleum products. Clear planning protects people, equipment and the environment.

Volume and measurement

Production is usually tracked in barrels (42 gal). Tank gauging and run tickets document each load. Condensate is lighter than crude — check fluid weight to see whether weight or volume limits a load.

Tank and site readiness

  • Tank battery access and lighting for night loads.
  • Load-line connections, valves and secondary containment in good condition.
  • Vapor and H₂S awareness where applicable.

Regulatory basics

Petroleum crude oil is commonly classified as a hazardous material for transportation, which means placarding, shipping papers and properly endorsed drivers. Classification depends on the specific product — the shipper is responsible for proper classification.

Information to share

  • Lease/well location and tank IDs.
  • Estimated barrels and frequency (daily, weekly).
  • Purchaser or delivery point.
  • Site safety orientation requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Is condensate hazardous for transport?

Condensate is often classified as a flammable liquid. The shipper determines the exact classification.
