Tanker Endorsement Guide

The tank vehicle (N) endorsement allows a CDL holder to operate vehicles that carry liquids or gases in bulk tanks.

When is it required?

Federal rules generally require the tank endorsement for vehicles carrying liquid or gaseous materials in a tank with an individual rated capacity over 119 gallons and an aggregate capacity of 1,000 gallons or more. Confirm your state's specific rules.

How to get it

  • Hold or be applying for a CDL.
  • Study the tank vehicle section of your state's CDL manual.
  • Pass the tank vehicle knowledge test at your licensing agency.
  • Some states and employers may require additional training.

Driving a tanker safely

Liquid surge pushes the truck forward when braking and sideways in turns. Partially filled tanks surge the most. Smooth braking, slower curve speeds and extra following distance matter more in a tanker than in a dry van.

Baffled vs. smooth-bore tanks

Baffles reduce front-to-back surge; smooth-bore tanks (common for food-grade products) surge more and require extra care.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a skills test for the tanker endorsement?

Typically it's a knowledge test only, but requirements are set by each state.

Do water haulers need an N endorsement?

Usually, if the tank meets the capacity thresholds. Check the job and your state rules.
