Spill Response Preparation Checklist

Preparation reduces harm when a release occurs. This is general guidance — follow your site's spill prevention plan and applicable regulations.

In an emergency

If anyone is in danger, there is a fire, or a release threatens waterways, call 911 first. Significant oil or hazardous substance releases may need to be reported to the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802 and to state agencies.

Before work begins

  • Know the site's spill prevention, control and countermeasure (SPCC) plan if one applies.
  • Post emergency and reporting contacts where crews can see them.
  • Confirm spill kits, absorbents and drain covers are stocked and accessible.
  • Identify nearby drains, ditches and waterways.
  • Confirm secondary containment around tanks and transfer points.

During transfers

  • Inspect hoses, valves and connections before every transfer.
  • Stay at the controls — never leave a transfer unattended.
  • Use drip pans under connections.

After a release

  • Stop the source only if it is safe to do so.
  • Contain with absorbents or berms.
  • Document what, how much, when and where.
  • Report according to site procedures and regulations.
